Federal police clash with residents in Afar

ESAT News

June 11, 2013

Following the assassination of Muhammad Kayeb, 20, by the Issa clan in the presence of Federal Police yesterday, the Afar people have been fighting with the Federal Police near Gewane Wlegeli, Afar, in Eastern Ethiopia. The shot out has continued until we entered the Studio.

The residents began the shooting because they believed that the Police were trying to generate conflict between the two people. ESAT had reported last week that the pastoralists of this same area were asked to give their weapons to the police but the police left the area and the clash was calmed. Residents state that the current clash is also linked to clashes of the previous week.

The extent of causality and death has not been established yet. ESAT’s attempt to speak with the officials of Afar has been unsuccessful.
