Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, in an interview with the government owned Daily Newspaper, Addis Zemen, said “if opposition political parties have democracy, good governance, development and peace as their agendas, then they should condemn extremism and terrorism standing with the government”.
Hailemariam also said “if these people (oppositions) think that there is no extremism and terrorism in Ethiopia, then these people are not living in Ethiopia. Not only in Ethiopia, they do not even know what is going on around the world. Thus, they do not the responsibility and the capacity to lead the people and practice politics. If they think they have the capacity, and if they keep on denying the fact that extremism and terrorism are growing in Ethiopia and is affecting the people, then the aim of these forces are not ready to compete and win in a peaceful, legal political system”.
He also advised all to impede the activities, to compete and in a peaceful, legal system and when they fail to win, if they say “if I lose it, the Nation should burn”, then they are destructors.
Hailemariam said in the protest, which was co-organised with the government, over 600,000 people took part showing that “extremist forces have been alienated from the people”.
It has been reported that the “anti-extremism” themed protest held in Addis Abeba last week has been directly led by the government and local district officials have been forcing citizens to put their signatures to affirm that they were taking part in the demonstration
