UDJ readying for Sunday’s mass demonstrations in Gonder and Dessie

ESAT News   July 11, 2013

Despite the continued arrest and harassment by the government, the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) has continued its campaign and promotion of the public demonstrations it has called in Dessie and Gonder towns, Northern Ethiopia on July 14, 2013. The demonstration is called to protest the human rights abuses, high cost of living and absence justice in Ethiopia.

The Party has said UDJ’s National Council Chair and Wondwosen Kinfe, journalist at UDJ’s Finote Netsanet Newspaper, who were on campaign promotion in Deissie, Zekariyas Yemanebirhan,  have been released after being seized for a while by the regional authorities.
Although the Mayor of Dessie town stated there will not be any demonstration on Sunday, Zekariyas said that nothing would prevent them from holding the demonstration.

Three members of UDJ namely Daniel Feysa, Abebe Kumelachew and Sintayehu Chekol, who have been detained on Tuesday in Addis Abeba, have appeared in Court yesterday. Police requested the judge 10 more days until it confirms the existence of a Party called UDJ. The detainees have been put behind bars.

In YekaSubcity, Addis Abeba, two members of UDJ, Wondeyefraw Tekle and Bruk Ashagre, have been released on bail after staying for a while in prison.
