Politicians, diplomats react to release of CIA torture report

Politicians and diplomats are reacting to the release of a highly controversial and inflammatory report on CIA interrogation techniques following the 9/11 attacks.

American embassies and diplomats abroad are preparing for potential backlash.

Texas Tech professor Tibor Nagy, the former US Ambassador to Ethiopia and Guinea, says the report is like waving a red flag in front of a raging bull.

“I wouldn’t want to be a US ambassador right now in certain parts of the world having to face what the reaction might be because this is the kind of thing that could push some people over the edge,” Nagy said. “All of this information has basically been out there, but to put it together and wrap a ribbon around it… There are a lot of people who don’t really need an excuse to go out and do awful things against Americans and America. It’s a wonderful excuse for them.”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz says the release of the report is endangering Americans and that it’s time for Senate Democrats to put the safety of Americans first, and scoring political points last.

“Within 48 hours, President Obama has set Guantanamo Bay detainees free, and Senate Democrats have endangered Americans all over the world by releasing classified tactics, which have since rightly been outlawed, used by the intelligence community in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Democrats’ foreign policy – defined by a series of actions designed to appease our enemies and diminish the capability and morale of our military men and women – is profoundly dangerous.

“Every civilized nation agrees that torture is wrong. But today’s partisan report will endanger lives, drive away our allies – who have never been more needed than now – and undermine the ability of our intelligence officers and soldiers to protect our national security. After six years, enough with saying ‘everything is George W. Bush’s fault.’ It’s sad that, with all the threats we face across the globe, Senate Democrats are still more interested in scoring political points against the Bush Administration than in working together to keep America safe and our military strong.”
